 From 1 July 2024, a payroll tax surcharge applies to large businesses. All taxpayers must now provide actual or estimated Australia-wide or Group Australia-wide wages when submitting all returns.
 On 3 September 2025, the ACT Government introduced the Payroll Tax Amendment Bill 2025. If passed, it will apply a new payroll tax rate of 8.75% from 1 January 2026 for employers or group with Australia-wide wages over $150 million.

16-SEP-2025: Payroll Tax Amendment Bill 2025

On 3 September 2025 the Payroll Tax Amendment Bill 2025 [https://www.legislation.act.gov.au/b/db_73300/] was introduced into the Legislative Assembly. The Bill applies to employers with total Australia wide, or group Australia wide, wages of more than $150 million and when passed will impose a new tax rate from 1 January 2026.
